Gender identity is a spectrum that describes to which degree a person perceives and recognizes their inner knowledge and outer expression of gender. Generally, this is the consistency between anatomical sex and the person’s internal maleness or femaleness or combination or neutrality. There are many names and definitions on the spectrum to identify yourself, understand who you are, and describe yourself to others, outside the rigidity of binary gender. Gender identity development is argued to be created through a combination of inherent biological (like temperament and hormones) and environmental factors (like interactions, cultural norms, and parental support).
